# Flashcards and Practice

> Build recall with flashcards, then check your understanding with questions about the material.

Flashcards help you recall terms without looking at their definitions.
Practice questions let you apply what you have learned and compare your reasoning with an answer.
Both are study tools within your material.

[Open the file you want to study](/students/learning/viewing-materials), then choose the activity below.

## Review Flashcards

Select **Flashcards** in the study panel when it is available.

  <Step title="Try to Recall the Definition">
    Read the term and explain it to yourself before revealing the other side.
    If the **Key Terms List** is visible below the deck, select **HIDE** to put it away while you test yourself.

  <Step title="Reveal and Compare">
    Select the card to reveal its definition.
    Compare it with your own explanation, then select the card again to return to the term.

  <Step title="Continue Through the Deck">
    Use the arrows or swipe to move between cards.
    The counter shows your position in the deck.
    Select **SHOW** below the cards when you want to review the terms and definitions together.

<Tip>
  While a flashcard is active, press **Space** to flip it.
  Use the **Left** and **Right** arrow keys to move through the deck.

## Answer a Practice Question

Select **Notes** and find a section that includes questions.

    Read the question, then select the requested options or type your response.
    If a **Hint** is available, open it when you need a starting point.

  <Step title="Compare With the Answer">
    Open **Answer** to check your response.
    Selecting an option alone does not mark it correct or incorrect, so take a moment to compare the reasoning too.

  <Step title="Revisit or Move On">
    Select **Hint** or **Answer** again to hide it for another try.
    Use **Next** or **Previous** to move between questions in the section.
    If the answer is still unclear, [ask about the topic in Chat](/students/learning/chatting-with-materials).

  Copy any response you want to keep before refreshing or leaving the page.

## Distinguish Practice From Assessed Work

Questions inside **Notes** help you study; they do not award course points or submit an assessment.
If your instructor assigned an assessment, [open that assessment and start an attempt](/students/assessments/starting-an-attempt) in its own workspace.

  These tools must be included for the file and finish processing before you can use them.
